How to clean canvas paintings

We recommend 4 different cleaning methods depending on how dirty the print is, increasing from the least to the most severe.

Hold canvas prints with gloves

1. Light to moderate dusty canvas paintings.

If your print only has a coat of household dust, it's best to avoid letting the canvas get a little damp.

Thorough wiping with a duster or dry microfiber cloth will keep your prints up to 99% dust-free. And you can be satisfied with the remaining 1%, right?

2. Canvas paintings with dust accumulated for a long time.

Notice the accumulation of dust that is difficult to clean? Or just an accumulation of daily grimaces?

In this case, you can slightly adjust the humidity! Wet a cotton or microfiber cloth, then wrap the towel outside until it's just slightly damp. Wipe the surface of your fabric firmly but not forcefully.

3. Canvas painting with colored drinks or crayons.

If you've spilled a drink on your painting or marked it with a marker, you may need to go an extra step to make the painting look its best again.

Just follow the instructions for Case #2, but this time with a mild household cleaner (soap or conditioner) mixed in the water. Then shake off the cloth and wipe it again without using detergent.

4. Canvas paintings stick to grease and stains more persistently.

Here are a few things you definitely shouldn't do when cleaning your canvas:

Do not spray water on the fabric. This will instantly make the print too wet – and prone to smudging when you start pressing hard.

Do not use strong chemicals. Abrasive cleaners can wreak havoc on the rubber inks used to print your photos – and they can even damage the canvas itself.

Do not rub too hard. Pressure is certainly good, but you want to focus on the surface of the fabric. Vigorous rubbing can push moisture deep into the fibers of the already saturated material – causing the print to begin to melt more.
